Operating since June of 1990, it was one of the first LPMuds to open, and is the oldest continually running LPMud in the United States and the second oldest in the world. It was also the first MUD of any kind to feature a quest-based advancement system. DR still maintains many of the classic elements of an LPMud, as well as several very unique guilds, original and enjoyable quests of varying difficulty, text versions of over a dozen card and board games, and a good number of more modern features such as built-in colors and aliases.

Since it has been continually running since 1990, it is now huge with many differently themed areas.

Just a few of the many areas in Darker Realms are: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Egypt, Norse Mythology, Vampires, the entire solar system, futuristic cities, and underground smugglers.

At Darker Realms you can sign in and immediately play. There is no required training. There are extensive help files, a tutorial, an automated tour guide, bins full of free equipment for low level characters, and some areas specifically designed for those starting out. However, what you do and how you do it is up to you.

There are guilds that you can join if you so desire, but you don't have to, and it is usually best to play a bit before deciding which you would like to join.

Alchemists, Barbarians, Cybertechs, Dragons, Paladins, Mages, and Shape Shifters.

Darker Realms is a wonderfully complex set of worlds with well written rooms. There are many things to discover, riddles to unravel, hidden things to find, quests to solve, and creatures to kill.
