How to Play a MUD: A Beginner's Guide

Choose a text-based world, connect in your browser or with a MUD client, and learn what to do when the welcome screen appears. You do not need a MUDVerse account to browse or play any game.

Individual games may ask you to create a character or game account after you connect. That account belongs to the game and is separate from MUDVerse. If the genre is completely new to you, begin with What Is a MUD?

Start playing in five minutes

  1. Browse All Games and choose themes and styles of play that interest you.
  2. Open a game and read its description, rules, connection status, and available player history.
  3. Select Play Now to connect with MUDVerse’s Dome Client or the game’s own web client.
  4. Read the welcome screen and follow its character creation or login instructions.
  5. If you are unsure what to do next, try help.

Choose a game that fits you

MUDs differ as much in their rules and communities as they do in their settings. On the All Games page, start with a theme you enjoy, then narrow the results according to how you want to play.

Search and sort

Search looks through game names, introductions, and descriptions. Sort by recent updates, reviews, votes, age, or confirmed connectivity depending on what matters to you.

Connection type

Choose MUD Client Support for conventional MUD connections or Web Only for games played through their own websites.

Quick filters

Use Has reviews for player perspectives, Updated in last 30 days for recently maintained listings, and Confirmed online for games MUDVerse has connected to recently.

Advanced filters

Theme, Game Type, RP Status, Player Count, Player Killing, and Language are especially useful to a new player. Game Size, Location, and Code Base offer additional ways to narrow the list.

“Confirmed online” means MUDVerse connected successfully within the recent-check window; it does not mean players are online at this moment. Votes show current popularity on MUDVerse rather than population, and reviews or operator-provided listing details may describe an earlier version of a game.

Gauge how active a game is

Open a game’s MUDVerse page and check its Last Successful Connection. When MSSP information is available, also look at the crawl date, the current PLAYERS value, and the Average Players Online Per Day chart. The history is usually more useful than a single snapshot when estimating typical activity.

  • Player counts may include idle characters, staff, bots, or several characters controlled by one person.
  • The value is not a count of unique people.
  • Time zones and days of the week can produce very different activity levels.
  • No MSSP information means population data is unavailable, not that the game is empty.
  • A small, close-knit community may be exactly what some players want.

For a fuller picture, compare several days of history, read recent reviews, and check the game’s official website or Discord when one is listed.

Connect with MUDVerse’s Dome Client

Dome Client runs in a web browser, so it is the quickest way to try a conventional MUD without installing anything.

  1. Open the game’s MUDVerse page.
  2. Select Play Now.
  3. Wait for the client to connect, then read the welcome screen before typing.
  4. Follow the game’s instructions to create a character or log in.

Some games provide their own web client, so the page that opens and its controls may look different from Dome Client.

Playing a web-only game

A game marked WEB ONLY is played through its own website and does not accept a conventional MUD-client connection. Select Visit Website and follow the game’s instructions there. Its interface and account setup may differ from a traditional MUD, and MUDVerse does not test website connectivity for the Confirmed Online filter.

Connect with another MUD client

Installed clients can provide persistent world profiles, local logs, mapping, accessibility features, and advanced customization. Use the MUD Clients guide to compare options for your platform.

  1. Choose and install a client.
  2. Find the game’s Host Name and Port under Connection Information on its MUDVerse page.
  3. Create a new world, profile, session, or connection in your client.
  4. Enter the published connection details exactly as shown.
  5. If the game lists TLS support, configure it according to the client’s instructions.
  6. Connect, read the welcome screen, and follow the game’s instructions.

Client terminology varies, and each game sets its own rules for triggers, timers, scripts, and other automation. Check those rules before enabling automated actions.

Your first ten minutes in the game

MUD commands are not completely standardized. The commands below are commonly supported, but a game may use different names or provide menus instead. Its welcome screen and help documentation always take precedence.

helpOpen the help system. This is the best general place to start when you are stuck.
help <topic>Read help about a particular command or subject.
lookDisplay the current location again.
who / @whoShow connected characters or players on games that support the command.
say <message>Speak to characters nearby.
north, south, east, west, up, downMove through commonly named exits.
inventorySee what your character is carrying.
quitLeave the game safely.

Many games also offer a tutorial, newbie channel, question channel, Discord, or beginner guide. Small MUD communities are often used to helping new players, so it is fine to say that you are new and ask where to begin.

Read the rules before settling in

  • Check minimum-age guidance and content information.
  • Understand when the game expects you to remain in character.
  • Review its player-versus-player combat policy.
  • Check rules about multiple characters and automation.
  • Do not assume that behavior allowed in one MUD is allowed in another.

The first game you try does not need to be the one you keep playing. Different MUDs can have dramatically different interfaces, communities, pacing, and expectations.

If something goes wrong

The connection is refused or times out
Check the game’s Last Successful Connection, verify the published connection details, and visit its official website for status information.
You do not know what to type
Read the most recent screen output, then try help. Look for a tutorial or newcomer channel if the help system points to one.
The text or colors look garbled
Check the client’s character encoding and color settings, or try another client.
Your mobile connection keeps dropping
Mobile operating systems may pause browser tabs or apps in the background. Keep the client in the foreground or compare mobile clients with connection-persistence features.
Nobody seems to be online
Review the player-history chart, try another time of day, or check the game’s Discord. Missing population data alone does not mean the game is empty.
You use a screen reader or keyboard navigation
Review the accessibility notes in the MUD Clients guide and check the game’s own accessibility documentation.
