I am a returning player, who played a few years after it was created in the mid 90s. This MUD has something for everyone. It has had 30 years of quality of life improvements and refinement. I’m amazed at the things you can now do with interactions with mobs and exploring of zones. Traveling to far places is made easier with speedwalking where it automatically reduces the text descriptions while you travel, turning them on when you arrive. You can have some basic conversations with some mobs and they can send you on quests, giving you equipment in return for the thing they asked. All this stuff that wasn’t available in the late 90s.
If you want to kill a whole bunch of stuff and level, there are plenty of zones for that. If you want story lines, there are plenty of zones for that. If you want intricate zones where there are secrets and items hidden in the descriptions that you can uncover, there are zones for that. You could easily spend months just going through and exploring everything. It’s 30 years of accumulated content from a wide variety of builders.
There are basically endless combinations of classes, since you choose a primary class and can eventually remort into a secondary class. That gives you a lot of different ways to build and play a character. You can also have up to 12 different characters on your account.
You can spend your time in the past, the future, or all the different elemental planes and other places. There is huge variety in the world.
There’s just a lot of great stuff on here as well as the people who play. Everyone on the MUD is helpful, especially to new and returning players.
I would say the only things that it is light on is role-playing, although you can certainly do that if you want, and PKing. With the smaller player base these days, there just isn’t as much opportunity or need for PK.
And of course, all of this is free
